But really, tribe really seems dead lately. Is it because of the technical issues or has it just outlived its usefullness?

I'm kind of floored for example in the belly dance video tribe that it's rare for someone to actually watch the videos posted. I would have thought that tribe to be thriving!!!! I jusr don't get it.

not sure where to post this but I thought I would start here. members of our troupe have participated in a local breast cancer fundraiser here called "Bust of Steamboat" The event calls for artists or whoever wants to create a piece of art or sculpture or painting or something involving a bra or boobs. The pieces are then auctioned off at a fun event at a local restaurant. Examples include paintings, photography, 3-d diorama with bras in them...the list goes on. You can check out some examples here thebustofsteamboat.org
anyhoo, we are going to auction off a vintage beaded and blinged beledi set and one of us will dance in it during the live auction.
We are looking for a NAME for our "piece" related to the event.
one of the girls started off with "bellies and boobs" but i think we can do better :)
Any ideas???

I need some advice, again, please.

I have a studio and have started to participate in First Fridays. I have asked different artists to bring their work, both to show t in my studio, for First Friday, and also to promote them for a month.

I think this is ‘good juju’. It benefits both artist and me, as people who might not normally come to my studio will perhaps visit it on First Friday and perhaps drum up some business for my studio classes or as rental space, and the artist gets a place to display their art for a month.

The first month, sadly, the artist did not sell anything. I had not thought about my compensation, but my next artist asked how much of a commission I would take. It makes sense (now that I think about it) that I would get a commission if a piece were sold, but I have no idea as this is my first time doing this.

What is normal for this type of arrangement? A percentage or a flat fee? I am open to your suggestions and appreciate any advice you might provide.

Thanks,
There is no one in my area interested in teaching ATS. This is within a 400 mile radius. Partly because I think it's a vicious cycle of no available teachers and partly because they haven't been really exposed to it.

I did find a lady in Ft Worth, whom I'm meeting at Tribal Alchemy for Sooz's class. So I know "I" can find guidance.

But that still leaves no one here in Tyler. I've called 3 studios, who are somewhat interested, but I'd have to teach.
Originally, I thought I'd be the student. Then I thought, just gather them, but where? Now it's snowballing into teaching just to get steady dance partners.

Is this how teachers are born made?

And the business part comes in at- I'd get paid, when I was willing to do it for free, only the logistics of a place to practice and insurance for mishaps came into play.

Any advice, suggestions, encouragement would be helpfull and appreciated. This will probably be cross posted in the teaching forum.
And no, I haven't been studying ATS for long. Cabaret is all that's available here. But I am ridiculously self motivated, organized, and disciplined.
The studios' interest came while I was looking for teachers and shopping in their boutiques.

Hello!
I'd like to invite anyone who's interested to join our brand new tribe "Higher Standards in Bellydance", which you can join here?
http://tribes.tribe.net/higherstandardsinbellydance#
To give you an idea of what we're about, here's the introduction:
Welcome!
This tribe is for bellydancers who wish to work together to raise the standards in bellydance. Some of our goals include getting bellydance out of venues like nightclubs, separating burlesque influence from bellydance, discouraging skimpy costumes and provocative choreography, and increasing the overall image of bellydance.
If you are tired of being turned down for events or dealing with the stereotypes that belly dance is not family appropriate, or somehow lesser than arts like ballet and modern, this tribe is for you.
Why is it that the oldest dance in the world is also the most misunderstood? Ballet, for instance, is only 400 years old, whereas the roots of bellydance are estimated to have originated 6,000 to 8,000 years ago in Babylon and Egypt. Yet ballet is well known and highly respected all over the world. When the word ballet is mentioned, one envisions a highly trained dancer in a beautiful theatre. When one envisions bellydance, many different things come to mind, from ill-trained dancers in a in sleazy nightclubs, to some of the finer troupes in respected venues. We need to work together to raise the standards in bellydance, and escape the stereotypes and misconceptions that bellydance has acquired. It is time for bellydance to be portrayed and understood for what it really is. Every dancer is an ambassador to this art form, and it is every dancers responsibility to educate the public, and our students to the best of our ability.

The woman coordinating the event wants it to be something that will give the women an ego boost and hopes it will encourage them to start taking lessons.

Since I have never done a girls night out (or bachelorette party) before, I had some questions:

1. What do you charge? (the woman suggested $100 up front and then $10-15 a head)

2. What do you wear? I’m thinking a full, sparkly cabaret costume might be a bit much. Perhaps dance pants, coin scarf, a wrap top, and some belly dance jewelry? (Belly dance semi-formal/business casual?)

3. Do you bring hip scarves for the women to use while dancing?

4. Do you bring hip scarves and other belly dance items to sell?

5. Suggestions of things I might be forgetting?

I'll admit, I was somewhat taken aback when the woman said she wanted an hour long lesson in which these women actually learn an entire choreography. o_O Do you think her request is realistic?

If there is already a thread on this, please, point the way. I did a search but couldn’t find one. :)

This is more for my other business, but applies to my dance business as well- I constantly get calls from companies who want to 'help me with my business' either with improving my credit ratings for when other companies want to deal with us (like Dunn & Bradstreet) or for furthering online client contacts, etc- In both my dance & other business, we are tiny & local & it honestly doesn't make sense to reach out to the whole world- with shipping to & from Alaska, we can't compete with other companies online anyway & I have no ambtions of "going global." Yes, local customers find us online too & we need to have a web presence, but it would never be cost effective to spend $200-$1000 a month in online anything for us. It drives me nuts that folks think that anyone with a registered business license over 5 years old must have at least 6 employees and be trying to take over the world.

But I sit through the stupid phone calls & the 'but wouldn't it be better' questions etc. anyway, & I am just sick & tired of being polite, but I can't help it. Can someone coach me on how to get out of pointless spiels about services I know from the first second that I don't want in under 5 minutes? Can someone just give me a backbone transplant or something?

I have some businesses lined up. How much do I ask them for? What is the typical ad price in a program for 1/4 pg, 1/2 pg and full page? Things to keep in mind are: I'm in New Mexico (it's not a wealthy state) and these are small local shops. Any advice is truly appreciated. Thanks!

I really enjoy this tribe because there's so many great topics of discussion, thank you.

I've recently become self employed and have been doing a lot of soul searching about my new business and about my belly dance business. There are so many things to conisder when starting and running a business and I was wondering if there is a need out there for a class on basic business practices (specifically starting and running your own independent business)?

I ask because I do commercial real estate, and so many times I have seen new business owners with stars in thier eyes, get themselves into trouble because they have a great idea, or service, but no skills in how to make that into a profit center for them. Especially creative people, because they are excellent at their craft, but the business side of things really bores the heck out the them, and it can really cost them by not paying attention to it.

If a 1-2 hour class was offered at a weekend workshop, would you consider taking it?

I would cover the basics like: marketing, taxes, bookkeeping, ethics, etc. What else would you like to see covered?

I'm just curious if this is a viable topic.

I need some advice please.

I am opening studio in a month, and will be doing some retail sales of items, but some of the teachers that will be renting space from me would like to put up their items for sale (very different than what I will offer, I tend to specialize in Tribal, or beginners types items like zills and practice hip scarves). I would like to give these teachers the opportunities to offer a sampling of their items by letting them display a ‘showroom” (perhaps a display case of examples) and then have the customers deal with the instructors instead of me being a middle person. At least I think that is what I want to do; consignment sounds like a lot more work and bookkeeping for me and I have enough going on already.

So, how do I charge for this service? They are using space that I provide, and could be used for my own retail so I think it fair to charge a fee for this service. Or is that not the way this type of arrangement goes??

Your suggestions are appreciated!

So I originally posted this on the "Too Much Drama to Dance" tribe, but thought it appropriate for discussion here too.

I'm just wondering what are people's thoughts on how to "tag" YouTube videos? I've seen some that get "under-tagged" and even though they are awesome and with famous dancers no one ever sees them, and on the other side there are people who "over-tag" their videos just to get them played more often. If you want to put "bellydance" in as many languages and terms as possible, I think that's smart, but when you start tagging other famous dancer's names I have a problem. I've seen it many times but just ran across a video (and the dancer will not be named) who tagged several BDSS members and a few other famous dancers. Someone commented and called out the dancer saying it was kind of sneaky, and the poster responded asking if they still liked the video, and anyway this dancer was "good friends" with them so they wouldn't mind. This still didn't strike me as very ethical.

If the dancer was really good friends with the people tagged and got their permission, then fine, but I gathered from the post that this person did not ask their permission. The only time (in my opinion) that it is appropriate to tag another dancer in your YouTube video is a) if it is a choreography by that dancer, in which case you should give credit where credit is due b) you are in a dance company with the other dancers, and are representing the troupe c) if you have studied with that person EXTENSIVELY - such as a licensure program - and are representing your teachers style d) that "tagged" dancers are aware of and have approved of being tagged.

I think the problem is not only people taking credit for another dancer's ability to build their name, but also the possibility that it will reflect on the "tagged dancers" in a way that they are not open to.

Any thoughts? Or am I just being a cranky b**** who needs to stop wasting time on YouTube?

business "press kit" (is there a different term when it's not going to the press?)
for now, I have a clear folder with pockets so my name & face are right there on the cover, but am looking at having some white folders printed with my cover on it (generic enough I can use it for multiple purposes)
-letter of introduction & intent
-page describing services & advantages to patron (3 pictures)- in one case combined with rate page
-page describing special services (depending on whether we're looking at classes or performance, this may end up varying, but basically, props & specialties, again with plenty of pictures)
-rate page (2 pictures) varies depending on venue (if I am listing corporate packages, looking for multiple bookings at a restaurant, appealing to small parties, etc.)
-should I include a sample contract???
-DVD with sample clips of dancing- CD with bio & pictures upon request for promotional purposes.

There are certain places I wouldn't include a rate page- one or two local businesses I know would be offended since they have a very 'small town, we'll take care of you' attitude, for example.

Media press kit:
hard copy & on CD & it also gets emailed a fair bit- depending on what they prefer.
-short bio
-short info on the dance (canned statement of what everyone asks anyway!)
-B&W & color photos- head shot & action shot
-List of previous press publication (photo copies or scans if available)
-Description of specific events

I am currently 5 months pregnant with my first baby. In the past few years I have been lucky enough to get great workshop gigs all over the world, and I don't want to have to give that up when the baby comes. I can't really leave an infant at home for a week at a time, so I am thinking that I might just bring her along on my travels. I'm wondering how many workshop instructors do this. I know that Suhaila has always traveled with her daughter, even when she was very young. Is it unusual/unreasonable to ask a workshop sponsor to arrange childcare while I'm teaching (even if I pay for it)? Would it be completely unreasonable to schedule baby feeding breaks into a busy workshop weekend? Am I completely crazy to think that I can do this?

Belly dance is a celebration of the female body, and certainly motherhood is all part of that. But I'm wondering just how baby friendly the workshop business practices really are. I'd love to hear about your experiences.
'Round these parts, the majority of students in my classes and workshops are new to bellydance, do not have a sense of its history, and frankly get glazed eyes when I go into all the Jamila-Masha-Carolena/Jamila-Suhaila Format/ Egyptian-Cabaret-Tribal-ATS-Fusion (and try to fit tAisha Ali and the Great Cabaret-Tribal Schism in there too)
Honestly, they just wanna learn some moves and go on with their life. So, my roots are tribal, heavy on the ATS, but I also utilize a lot of Suhaila's technique because, well, it's solid. I give credit as I teach, or at least I try to, and I teach combos from "Big Name" dancers I've learned from. But I'll tell you, when I say "this is from Jill Parker" I get a room full of blank stares. And Gods, have you ever tried to explain how and why ATS and Jamila/Suhaila Basic Egyptians are different? Sheesh!

Hello,

So, as mentioned in a previous thread where I was asking about flooring, I am considering opening a studio and wonder if you have any advice for me. I asked about this on a yahoo list but only got a couple replies (though one of them was GREAT, thanks again Shay :), so I figured I would try here too.

Been teaching for 4 years; in that time I have been renting space from other studios, and have had to change locations 5 times due to my time slot becoming unavailable, or the most current issue is they no
longer have room for any of my classes (or the other MED classes that are renting from the same location) starting in the fall.

I have weighed the cost benefits of renting, and getting my schedule changed around due to being a renter, and am seriously considering opening my own studio. This has been something I have been thinking about doing for a couple years now, so I am not just jumping into this blindly, but as I have never opened a business like this before, I could use advice!

I am looking at space that costs more than I pay for rent, but I don’t expect to use the space the whole time, I think I would get into the business of renting out space to other instructors and have had some interest already, even before it is finalized. I am still in the planning phase but I think things are going to be moving quickly in the next 2 weeks for the space I have looked at which is plenty big enough for me now, and has some room to grow and support workshops suitable for my area.

Right now the lease is something I can mange between my classes and renting out space (and I have crunched the numbers so I know how much ‘rental income’ I need to feel secure before committing to this). I am in the process of securing renters now (I have half of what I need already), and think I have thought of most everything from a financial standpoint, from startup costs like sound system, mirror installation, seating for the waiting area, changing room area, etc, I have my own personal fitness insurance already, am investigating building rental/theft insurance and will be meeting with my local small business economic development center next week to work out a business plan.

This place seem so perfect and things seem to be falling into place so well… so many things about this location are so perfect (central downtown location, lots of parking) and the owners seem really motivated to get me in (so much so they are willing to consider building the floor for me as part of my lease arrangement!) that it almost seems some other force is at work :)

And do any of you have any advice for a tentative first time studio owner? Other than figuring out how to budget to cover costs, and how to be a teacher, I know nothing about running a studio so would appreciate any and all words of wisdom.

And, does anyone know what the approx ASCAP/BMI costs for music in the studio might be? I put in a request for a quote on their website mid last week but haven't heard back yet so that is my biggest wildcard right now....

Thanks in advance,

"Ultimate Belly Dance Combos
Are you a fan of Mardi Love? What about Onca, Jillia, Fredireque or Sandra of San Francisco? Haven't had the money or time to travel to the big events like Tribal Fest, Tribal Revolutions, or the Miami Bellydance Convention? Well, here is your chance to learn some of the highlights from workshops taught at those events. [Teacher Name Removed] will teach a 'greatest hits' of combos learned from these expert bellydancers then coach you in ways to combine and deconstruct the combos to use them in your own choreographies."

This struck me as unethical. She’s taking other dancers’ workshop lessons and using them for her own profit. But I wondered if there is another side? What do you think? Theft or can you see legitimacy in this?

I’m sure she didn't have time to do a lot from each of the dancers listed above, so she didn't teach their entire workshops, and she added a layer by talking about ways to “combine and deconstruct the combos” but the concept still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Very much in the planning and feasibility study stages but I am currently looking at leasing a space that needs the floor redone (it was a pool hall, and has very dirty old carpet, which appears to be just on top of concrete, that will need to be replaced). The owners are open to putting in flooring for me, provided that falls within a reasonable price. I don’t foresee true sprung floors, but perhaps see a nice wood floor with underlayment that offers some spring.

My question is, for those of you that have done this before, what are the things I need to be sure doesn’t get installed, and conversely, what might be the best, and most cost effective ways to approach this? The space is just over 1700 square feet, and I have indicated I need at least 2/3 of the floor with ‘dance floor’.

i plan to one day get certifiation to teach actual ats...

but anyways here is the question. for anyone tht has ever worked in europe. do i need a license in germany to dance and make profit? and for the teaching? for the teaching i planned just simple in home lessons, possibly working with the local military gym to help out with teaching classes. i know for certain countires you need an actual icense to dance...and i was not sur eif germany is one of them. of course i realize once i arrive in germany i have to get everything set up and check but just trying ot get a heads up right now.

to add in...if anyone knows anyone in the belly dance business located near wiesbaden, i would greatly appreciate a link or contact email. other than dancing myself and helping others get into it, i of course want to keep training and learn from new dancers so it is vital i learn the german dance scene asap!
thanks for your time ladies

Hi ladies I'd love some advice on a situation I'm finding myself in. My family has a house in another state that is driving distance from my home. Once a month I go up to stay with my parents and see my grandparents. I have been looking for places up in the area to see dancers or maybe even drop in on a class, but I have found nothing. I emailed a few local establishements to see if they had dancers and one emailed me back asking if I would be interested in dancing there. This would be a great use of the many hours of free time I have while stuck in the boonies, and I'm not averse to it, but I wonder if it's okay as far as community and territory goes. I've emailed a dancer I know from the state to ask what the price range is for the area before I meet with the owner, but I don't want people to think I'm moving in on their turf.

I should include the caveat that the place in question has never had dancers before so it would be a new venue and I'm completely open to kicking the gig over to a local dancer if they start asking for more then the once monthly performance I can do.

Any suggesionts, hints, advice?

I think many of you are aware of the emails trying to attract and scam dance teachers. Now they are targeting attorneys! I just received this from the State Bar of MI.

Attempted Internet Scam involving Michigan Trust Account
A Michigan law firm recently narrowly avoided an internet scam that has ensnared some attorneys in other states. We are reporting the scam to put members on notice to exercise extra diligence when presented with circumstances similar to those noted below.
The scam works like this - the law firm receives a referral from someone posing as an outstate attorney to enforce a simple contract dispute or collect a debt from a local corporation owed to a foreign company, normally Taiwanese (although any foreign company would work - the time difference complicates communications). The law firm, believing it is exercising due diligence, confirms that the prospective client is a real company trading on the Taiwanese stock exchange and then enters into a fee agreement, thereby placing itself in the trap. It sends a demand letter, and a month later receives a cashier's check in full payment, made payable to the law firm. The client is pleased and directs the law firm to wire the money, after deducting its fees and costs. The law firm deposits the money in its client trust account, waits for the check to clear the local bank, and wires the money to the client. Things fall apart when the bank on which the check is drawn notifies everyone that the check is a counterfeit fraud - by which time it is too late to stop the wire transfer, and the law firm's client trust account is now out the proceeds, which the firm has to replace. The scam works because the law firm erroneously believes that the check is good when it clears the law firm's bank. That is not the case. The first clearance is only provisional. The bank on which the check is drawn has additional time under the law to verify the check.
In the case of the Michigan law firm, one of its members became suspicious when the payment check arrived. It had all occurred too easily, without litigation, and with full payment. He checked the name and telephone number of the Alabama attorney who referred the case, called him, and discovered someone posing as the attorney had made the referral.
Beware of similar circumstances. Remember, those engaged in these schemes are devious and will use the names of actual companies, client contacts, and referring attorneys in an effort to sell the scam. If you suspect you have encountered a similar situation, two steps that may be helpful are: a) independently verifying the names and contact information provided to you, making contact with appropriate persons to verify the representation; and b) not disbursing the deposited funds until the bank on which the cashier's check is drawn clears the check; in some cases it is possible that could take up to a week or more, but if you keep a copy of the check, you could call the bank on which it is drawn to see if they will advise you when it will be or was paid.

Some even had sets as long as 20 minutes. A show that was supposed to end at 9:00 didn't even start its second half until 9:00.

I will soon be meeting with the organizers to talk about things they could do to enforce whatever time limit they choose to set for their performers. I have some thoughts on what to suggest, but I'd be interested in hearing what others think as well.

How do YOU enforce whatever time limit you set for performers in the shows you organize?

Do you ask for the music in advance and check how long it is, and refuse to let them swap in something else at the last minute?

Do you have a stage manager with a strong personality who instructs the sound engineer to stop the music promptly when performer has reached the end of the allotted time frame, thereby embarrassing the offender and making him/her walk off stage in silence?

Do you threaten that anybody who exceeds the allotted time will not be invited back to perform in your future shows? If so, do the threats work?

Interested in hearing what works for all of you!

This is a topic for any dancer (professional or not) who performs publicly and for whom dancing is a big part of life, but who also holds a "day job."

What is, according to your opinion and experience, the proper separation between your dance hobbie/job and your office-or-whatever-else job? Do you or have you ever mentioned your belly dance hobbie/job to a co-worker or even a boss? In what context is it acceptable to do so? What's not acceptable, and where would a line be crossed?
If a co-worker shows interest in attending one of your performances as a result, do you give them the appropriate information and welcome them to come?

I would greatly appreciate some opinions and tales of experience! Perhaps I will post my own and give some context to this question later on, if we can get a discussion going on here.

As I recall from years past, Rekkassah has had the same nazi policy - which THEY HAD before their ever WAS a youtube !

I mean, this 'rule' makes it clear that if your Aunt Jane comes to see you dance, and maybe you haven't communicated with her about this rule, and she happens to end up shooting you with her iphone......SHE might be REMOVED from the event while you're performing!
And has anyone ever REALLY had issues with their performance being 'stolen' and placed on youtube ?

I've decided to go ahead and give it a try. So I signed up yesterday after her presentation.

So far, in my searching, I've found a lot of mentions of belly dance. The overwhelming majority seem to be belly dance students twittering about practicing, going to class, etc, as well as twittering about their daily lives. That's not so surprising - of course there are a lot more students than there are teachers or professionals. I've found two other belly dance teachers that I know on there and sent them notes to say hi and let them know I'm on there too.

So, I'm finding my way in this interesting new world. Are any of you using twitter for dance-related stuff? Do you see it as being a good tool for growing your dance-related business? If so, how? How are you going about building up your networks?

I'm on there as @shiradotnet if anyone wants to see what I'm up to!

In addition, the instant the kids have left the stage, their families leave. Performers who appear later in the show then find themselves dancing to a lot of empty chairs.

Is that fair/appropriate? Should organizers communicate and enforce a rule stating that, although it's okay for kids to perform, there will be NO special accommodation of providing early time slots for them?

And how do you, as organizers, handle the issue of audience members who leave the instant their pet dancer has finished her performance?

4. Lets you set up your own email addresses, including ones with forwarding and autoresponders
5. Lets you use pop and smtp to both SENDand receive your email even though your Internet access is provided by someone else (Earthlink loses on this criterion - I can receive, but not send)

Hi there everyone!
I'm thinking about taking my troupe out to a competition either late this year or sometime next year. I've been wandering around Google trying to get an idea of which one is the best . . . and I'm not having any luck, so now to solicit your collective advice!
Things I'm considering:
I'm not concerned about going somewhere close - we're up for travel.
Should have good categories - must include professional soloist and troupe divisions.
Attendance - the more people there, the better! Good, well-known titles are nice too - always good for advertising.
I'd like to go to one of the bigger ones, but I'm not sure if the more well known ones are bigger because they are better, or just because they are older.
Judges should be well rounded, and the scoring should make sense/be fair.
Prizes! We like trophies and tiaras. ^_^ But that's lowest on the list.

I'm leaning towards Bellydancer of The Universe or Belly Dance Nationals. But I'm also considering Arabesque Bellydance Competition and Wiggles of The West.

Any information you have would be excellent. I'd mostly like to hear from those who have attended competitions and can recommend them based on experience, but any input you have would be appreciated. ^_^
Thanks in advance!

I cannot get any real volume out of the PA using the little mini shuffle. works great when I dock my Heavy duty Boom box into the PA, just seems to be weak with the IPOD?

I am perplexed and frustrated by the difficulty in finding a place to get hired to dance here. Either the owners are very particular about what they want (style and look of dancers-"big boobs/pretty spakly girls")-which does't really get me all that enraged. Whatever, run your resturants how you want, it's the second category that really bug me. It's one woman getting paid for different time slots, to organize dancers, and the dancers recieving only tips. This happens in several resturants around town, and with a few different coordinators. Then there is also someone who puts dancers out after only a few months of classes, as "professionals" for $20-$30 an HOUR or more. SEVER UNDERCUTTING for standard rates anywhere, am I right?

All in all, it makes it feel rather impossible and riddiculous to get a paying job dancing here. I am a good dancer, and although I am still learning (who isn't?) I deserve to be paid to dance. And here's my catty side showing through but...I can follow music better than most of these dancers I keep seeing being coordinated to dance (I guess it's a little more laid back anyways, fairly much anyone can talk to whoever's coordinating, to dance), I have better stage presence, and I'm serious about what I'm doing. Maybe they are too, but I doubt many of them consider this their career of choice. Maybe noone else has a problem with all of this, but I do, and I don't understand as artists, and professionals how we can choose to undermine the importance of inner-community support, exterior presentation (i.e. the public doesn't know these arn't professionals dancing usually), and honest integrety.

Also, maybe I'm in a fairly small city compared to most large cities and the demand isn't as high for dancers, but I don't think moving would solve the problem would it? What do we do about this? Can we do anything? In the meantime, what should I do to maintain my professionalism, and get hired?

This is a multi-part question, so bear with me, please. :)

The studio where I take classes is very much about creating a safe space for women. I don't think men are outright told they can't take lessons there, but it is definitely advertised towards women and has a very strong women's community/safe haven/sisterhood vibe. Part of the reason for the "no men" rule/guideline is that the teacher wants to make sure we don't feel leered at in class and wants us to relax (in the past, some dancers' boyfriends would come and watch).

This got me thinking because I'm bisexual and I wondered what the difference was between the straight guys and me. I'm not in the closet, but I don't walk up to everyone and say, "Hi, I'm Jen and I'm bisexual," so some don't know. But perhaps it wouldn't bother them because, even though I'm attracted to women, I'm a woman so I have the same parts, so it's not anything novel for me (plus, I view most of them like sisters).

So, my questions: Do men take lessons in your studios? Does it matter if the man is gay or straight (perhaps a silly question, but I know a lot of people who view a gay man as "one of the girls")? How does your studio feel about GLBT dancers? Have there been issues between the dancers? Do they feel safe/comfortable enough to be out?

I don't entirely feel like all of the girls in my studio will be comfortable with me when they figure out I'm bisexual, which makes me sad because I'll lose some of that sense of community I have there. That's part of the reason I made a GLBT belly dancer and friends tribe on Tribe -- for the support/community. :)
Do we panic and lower our prices? Do we hold firm? How do we stay competitive? How do we even stay afloat?

Several years ago a restaurant owner who has been running a successful venue for over 18 years now told me "the way we did it was to always adapt and change. We change to bring in new business. We think up new ideas to expand our market. The customer doesn't want things that are stale. You always need to change and keep on top of things"

Flash forward to our current economic down turn (or is it tailspin?).
What have I observed?
I've seen a few places close.
I've seen a few places schedule fewer nights for dance or cut out dance entirely (they ascribe by the "tighten your belt" theory which does make sense).
Now that we're further into the economic crisis I've noticed something different. The businesses who have been around the longest, or with owners who have run (successful) businesses the longest- THEY are working to expand their market. THEY are advertising. THEY are making changes to set them apart!
They obviously had enough success before to help them weather the storm. But then in the midst of it, they realize they need that something special to help them stay afloat, to help them be the place the clients want to spend their hard won money.
In the last two weeks I have seen one place that never had live entertainment decide to start dancing soon to broker excitement and bring new people in. Another place that has always had live music is starting to have dancing soon, thus expanding their market. Another place just expanded and renovated another floor beautifully- changing their look from "nice elegant dinner venue" to "transport you somewhere else dinner experience".
How can we take these lessons and apply them to our own businesses?
How do YOU plan on expanding your market?
How can we encourage students to take classes and stay in classes?
How can we try to help build the belly dance community when people are needing to cut out luxuries?
How can we get parties when again people are cutting out luxuries?
How can we do all of this in positive, proactive ways that benefit the community, the art as well as our businesses in the long run?

Have you filed your taxes yet?
Are you including your dance business?
I'd honestly say it's complicated and best to talk to a professional, or maybe talk to a few to find one who suits your needs.
Some are so conservative they hesitate to itemize things that CAN be. Some are so creative...they could work for Enron.

There is a list on Bhuz with a very good basic breakdown that is pretty much what my accountant says.
http://www.bhuz.com/forum/business-belly-dance/27391-spinoff-taxes.html
To make it more simple: If you use it for dance *and don't get enjoyment/benefit from it outside of contributing to your dance* then it can be a deduction.
The IRS says, "all deductible business expenses are those that are:

1. Incurred in connection with your trade, business, or profession
2. Must be "ordinary" and "necessary"
3. Must "NOT be lavish or extravagant under the circumstances""

So, SURE we need to maintain appearances in a certain way for dance...but an expensive cut and color are enjoyed during all aspects of life. Whether or not you would spend so much if you didn't dance.
Wigs, hairpieces- pretty ordinary to change or enhance your appearance for performance. Most people don't wear them outside of performance...so those can be a write-off.

Work out clothes we can wear on a day-to-day basis- doing laundry, going to a store, a walk etc. They don't count.
We don't wear the latest Bella or Eman to the grocery store. That counts.

Dance classes are obviously dance related.
Gym memberships benefit you outside of the dance. Unless your doctor prescribes particular exercises in order for you to be able to keep dancing (and you have that documented).

I have a computer and MP3 that are for dance. I have use of my husband's computer or laptop for other stuff.
If you have a room dedicated solely to dance then part of your mortgage/utilities can also be a deduction. BUT the IRS can be pretty strict about "sole purpose". I never did this until an accountant helped me with it.
That being said- last year my accountant was in the hospital with cancer. I took my previous years accountant prepared return as a guide for how to do things - and used taxact.com with the current income/expense data and did it myself.

Having an accountant you trust AND STILL doing your homework I think is a good idea.
There are a couple guides online:
http://www.theartrepreneur.com/library/tax_guide_performing_arts.asp

This site has a helpful expense list. Remember though- it's a list to bring to the accountant who will guide in what and how much can actually be deducted. I'd recommend an accountant who is experienced with performers...but if yours isn't- bring them the lists from this site. Might be helpful- or at least a good guideline for asking questions.
http://www.actorstaxprep.com/

More complete version of the first link
http://www.artstaxinfo.com/actors.shtml

Reading those sorts of links should be a good help in making an informed accountant decision.

Do vendors usually give a percentage to the sponsor or a set fee or a mix? I want to make it beneficial for the vendors to come. I need some advice on how to set it up. I can see things from both sides because I am a vendor and an event organizer. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I just noticed, as I was perusing their selection that they have one that has what looks like a belly dancer on it. If you go to their site and search for choreography dance you should find it. It's not my cup of tea as the colours don't appeal to me, but I thought others might be interested.

I guess my question is, do you think this is a useful tool for a Pagan expert who is also a belly dancer, costume designer and charcoal/watercolor artist? I'm pretty reluctant to get on yet another network.

We are in the early planning stages but anticipate holding it in January 2010. We are going to keep it to 2 days and are hoping to make this a roundtable of sorts. We are certain that we have a lot to learn from each other.

For the moment, what we'd like to know is this:

a) Is this something you would like to attend?
b) What topics would you like to see addressed?

Please give us feedback as we'd love to hear what your needs are and how we can address them. We are going to do this even if it just ends up being her and I treating ourselves to massage and pedicures...LOL. But we'd really love to have some of you other event producers join us for a fun and educational weekend in Vegas, baby!!!
