Alrighty...I reckon I will spill about both of my 'public nudity' issues.

I was at a fantastic hafla where the organizers made use of what space they had by creating the dressing area behind the backdrop to the stage. The backdrop was held up by a framework section with legs. Everything was going hunky dory when myself and my dance partner went back to change...during intermission. All of a sudden we hear this noise, behind us. We both turned around and were shocked to be looking at the audience instead of the back of the backdrop. All of the folks were just sitting in their chairs, facing us dead on. My dance partner was still pretty much dressed, but I had removed most of what I was wearing up top, so I had to cross my arms in front of me and turn around quickly to face away from the audience while the organizers worked on quickly getting the backdrop up. I will always thank the videographer for not filming at that time...or at least cutting it out of the video ;)

Mistakes are times for learning, right? At another hafla performance...where we were performing a Glass Dance, we were finishing up the dance, had our glasses (totaling almost three pounds) on our trays, held aloft by one hand out in front of us. The other arm, flourished above our heads dramatically, as we rose up from the floor. Unfortunately...I stepped on the bottom of my harem pants...thus I went up, but the pants did not. Standing there with my pants half way around my bum, one arm imobilized by the tray of glasses...I had to lower the other arm to tug my pants back up. I might could have gotten away with the pants going down so low, if only I had learned by that point to match my underwear to my costume. Alas...I was wearing bright pink striped Cheshire cat underwear. Not exactly very discret.

I am the musician here, and I watch the dancers very closely so that I can adjust the music for their movements, etc.. I've seen a lot of mishaps. The dancer's shall remain nameless (for obvious reasons).

#1. This happened during a larger group number at The Lafayette Grill. A very wonderful and experienced dancer was the principal in a group number. She was wearing a black and silver coin bra with flimsy sequin straps. One of the group dancers went into a spin with a dance belt being used as a veil (you know, a heavy coined dance belt) at the same time the principal dancer went into a spin in the opposite direction. The coined veil snagged the back of the coin bra and ripped it open along with the two shoulder straps and as the principal dancer finished her spin, she was topless. (We promised her that nobody saw anything, but later she found out that we all lied and has dealt with it)

#2. Group tribal number on a stage at a performance at a college. The dancer's costumes didn't come in time for dress rehearsal so they only wore them first at the night of the performance. Very beautiful black and gold dance belts with long coined tassles out of a nice heavy coin. By the time of the second spin, the dancers all had become so tangled up with each other that they had to shimmy off stage en mass in a huddle.

#3. At a performance in brooklyn at a hookah lounge. A wonderful dancer was dancing a classic Egyptian rapid shimmy walk towards a table of Egyptian men , and her very heavy coined skirt opened and dropped to the floor with a thud. Not wanting any panty lines showing, she wore no undergarments. (lots of cell phone pictures were snapped by the audience members)

#4. At a performance in a library on Long Island a group of students were doing a group sword dance..... and yes one of the swords fell and did stick one of the other students in the foot. OUCH!
