The topic of performer insuracne was brought up on Bhuz, and I had a little question to add. I thought I would bring it up here as well.
Is there a need for insurance for dancers who perform at restaurants, private parties, bellygrams, etc. Theoretically, during audience participation, a customer could hurt him/herself while dancing with the dancer, right?

Re: Performer Insurance
Sun, August 5, 2007 - 8:13 AMYes, your general liability insurance should cover this. www.esportsinsurance.com or www.myfitnessinsurance.com, or http:///www.danceinsurance.com. The restaurant should also have coverage, but if someone is intent on suing, they will sue any possible liable party, so it's good to have your own insurance.

Re: Performer Insurance
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 5:28 AMIt was my understanding that insurance from MyFitnessInsurance is for teaching only...it would NOT cover a performer or accidents caused by a performer.
I have yet to find an insurance company that reasonably covers liability for performers. If anyone does...I'd LOVE to learn about them!!!

Re: Performer Insurance
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 6:29 AMIt probably depends on what coverage you elect to have. My insurance covers me, any teachers I employ, event insurance for performances and anything I sponsor, and also covers any students who perform with me. Of course, all that costs extra and is optional, but it is possible to get that type of coverage.

That sounds great! I have basic coverage from MyFitnessInsurance and they don't offer these options at all.
Can you share the name of the company that you use?

Re: Performer Insurance
Fri, August 10, 2007 - 4:52 AMI use sports and fitness insurance for insuring my practice as an instructor. This covers me when I give "belly dancing demonstrations" (i.e. solo performances).
I also have a 10 member professional troupe. To insure the troupe for our productions--haflis, theater shows, et cetera--that we produce, I decided to incorporate as a sole proprietor LLC and purchase a general commercial policy. The LLC protects my personal assests and the commercial policy protects me and all of my dancers in the event that any member of the public is injured while attending one of our shows.
In our area theaters and function rooms (halls, et cetera) carry insurance but require renters to show proof of insurance as well. The kind of insurance that protects you if someone hurts themselves as a result of dancing with you will not cover you if someone decides to sue you as event organizer because they tripped over a chair leg, or fell down the stairs and hurt themselves.
