Emergency Plans

Okay, ladies and gentlemen: do you have emergency plans for your places of business? What is your fire evacuation route? Do you have your fire safety items in place (fire detectors, fire extinguishers, and do you know how to use them)? Where do you go for earthquakes or tornadoes? What is your evacuation route? As a business owner or even an employee, I feel responsible for the people that are in my place of business to be able to let them know where they should be going. It is important to have a plan and if possible, have it posted.

Here is a very good resource from FEMA:

once you do have a safety plan in place, tell your insurance too- sometimes you can get a reduced rate if you can prove you have safety plan in place & your employees trained.

This is always a good question.

I do have a plan for tornado safety (ie, where to take cover) at one of the studios where I teach, but not at the other. I really do need to get organized and do that. After all,we had an F2 tornado strike our town just 3 years ago - it even came up our street and hammered our house and yard! And just 3 days ago, there were 3 tornados within a 60-mile drive of where we live!

I also have a policy regarding weather-related class cancellations, which I always discuss the first day of class. For example, if there is a current tornado or winter storm warning in effect for our county at the time class is supposed to meet, then I will cancel class.

I guess I really should find out where the fire alarms and extinguishers are for the studios where I teach...

Yes, it really does instill more confidence in yourself when you know that you know what you will do in an emergency. If your students know that you know what to do, they also have more confidence, and trust, in you. It is so good that you go over that on the first day of class. I have it posted on the wall, but last class I had I did not go over it in class. I like the going over it in class.
