I'm curious what people would charge for a private lesson in a student's home vs. a group. I have someone asking, because she can't make any of the lessons in the area and she wants a teacher to come to her instead. Anyone have an experiences with this sort of situation?

Re: Group vs. Private lessons costs
Sat, March 14, 2009 - 7:49 PMI look at what the minimum I would make in an hour of teaching, sometimes add in drive time too- my private lessons are pretty pricey, but some folks have opted for a small group lesson to split the cost. basically, I don't have time to do private lessons unless you really make it worth my while. & I don't think my prices are too terribly high since we are paying $25 per half hour violin lessons for my son...& we have to go to the teacher's place. Also, if you are renting a studio, consider billing the studio rental fees separately/in addition to your lesson fees so they know where the $ is going.
my prices are here:

Re: Group vs. Private lessons costs
Sun, March 15, 2009 - 1:22 AMI charge the same amount for private sessions whether it's one or four. I've been thinking about changing this, but up to now it's worked well. And yes definitely add in travel costs if you are going to them. Above four, I would work out of per person rate. At that point, you're basically teaching a full class. -

Plan ahead
Sun, March 15, 2009 - 9:36 AMWhen you go to their house, you are in their territory, so lay down the rules up front. What happens if they cancel a lesson? What happens if they are not there when you arrive? Is it okay for them to invite their friends to split the cost or do you expect extra? Is there easy-access parking?
House calls for private lessons should be expensive. Like a gig, you are hauling yourself and stuff to a place under someone else's control. The kind of person who 'can't make any of the lessons in the area' and who cannot get herself to a private lesson MAY turn out to be a very self-centered person who doesn't care much about anyone's else convenience. So think through several scenerios and stick to your guns, even if you end up being buddies. -

Re: Plan ahead
Sun, March 15, 2009 - 12:14 PMI'd ask around your local area and also check other similar professions. What do ballroom instructors pay? Can you even GET a ballet master to do a "house call"? What about yoga or pilates?
She is asking for quite a service. Here in the Baltimore DC area privates range from $50-$75/hr. That's not really including travel fee usually. I know yoga instructors who charge $75-$100/hr for privates.

Re: Group vs. Private lessons costs
Sun, March 15, 2009 - 6:02 PMI charge $75/hour for private in-home ballroom dance lessons. It's a different market, but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.

Online? How does that work? I sure wouldn't pay near that for anything but an in-person session in a real dance studio with a good floor and mirrors...but $100 is still high. The range I've seen is $50-75/hour, which to me is quite reasonable--depending on the quality of the teaching, of course.
