It seems belly dancers all over have gotten this e-mail recentlyas well as guitar, chess and tap dance teachers.
Hello,
Thank you for the quick response to my equiry for a belly dance teacher for my daughter, i have gone through your site and i am really impressed when i read about you and your teachings. My daughter's name is Loretta Allen, she is 18 years of age and she reads and understand musical notes and plays guitar really good. She developed love for belly dance about 6 months ago after the death of my wife in Sweden, may her gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Thus this lesson would take her mind off the death of her mother.
Please be informed that, my daughter is a beginner and you would to teach her from the elementary stage, she would be having a private lesson of 4 weeks, 5 times a week and for 2 hours which comes to a total of $2,000. I would be making arrangements with my PA to issue and make the payment to you in form of a certified check or money order. August 15th is just round the corner, there is a limited time, so as soon as i have your full name and address including your contact number to which the payment would be issued and sent to, i would immediately pass it to my PA who would immediately issue and send the payment to you. I await your urgent response to these.
Regards
Terry.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Mon, July 18, 2005 - 9:12 AMLovely! As if artists don't have enough trouble making it in the world! What do these people hope to gain? If you are going for identity theft shouldn't you pick on the well to do? Not that there aren't some talented artists that are well to do, but really. Most of us don't have 2 nickles to rub together.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Wed, July 20, 2005 - 7:45 PMWow, I was wondering about this. I figured it wouldn't hurt to give an address in case it was for real -- you'd have to pay money to get any information about me with my address, and most scammers won't do that.
And he only offered me $1000. I'm just the cheap option, I guess. :)
-
Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 10:16 PMWow, he didn't even offer me any money...he just asked what I would charge. I gave my prices, details on what would be covered & an address to send payment also. I offered for him to pay via credit card but he said that he would prefer to pay via check or money order. I thought that kind of funny considering he was "flying in from overseas". He went as far as to tell me that his daughter would be transported to & from class from Midland, which is quite distant from where I'm at.
I don't get this scam. Am I missing something? What's the point of this? What can they do with my address? What else?
-
Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, July 21, 2005 - 10:25 PMthis is the reply I received after I gave a detailed list of polices, prices, etc....
Hello,
Thanks for your concern, my daughter would be spending approximately 2months in the US. She would also be staying with a friend of mine in Midlands and she would be the one to always drop her and pick her up after lessons, i also prefer i pay in advance in form of a check or money order. However, i am going to need your informations to which my PA would issue and send the payment to. Please, be aware that there are no limitations but you need to remember that, she is a beginner and you would have to teach from the elementary stage. Moreso, i would be counting on you to provide my daughter a very good and comprehensive lesson that she would always remember, i await your quick response as soon as possible.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 12:11 PMThe red flag goes up at:
"However, i am going to need your informations to which my PA would issue and send the payment to."
Why isn't his PA (personal assistant, I'm assuming) handling ALL of this transaction? I don't believe there is one.
He's on a "phishing" expedition, probably, for your bank information. I wouldn't follow up on this.
If it's too good to be true, it is.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Fri, July 22, 2005 - 5:26 PMI'm so totally bummed. Especially since my students went out of town & didn't tell me. I rented space for us for 3 consecutive weeks and NO SHOW, NO CALL...now, I'm practically giving them lessons for free because of the out of pocket that I have already put out.
Sorry about the rant, but that just bugs me. Scammers have nothing better to do!
After I read this posting I sent "Terry Allen" an email asking who he is...of course, no reply.
Comfort Lewis....(see other posting) had some weird response for me too.

Sun, July 31, 2005 - 12:15 PMThis guy doesn't quit!!!
This is the response I got today....how should I respond? I feel like saying oh well, too bad, its all mine now!
Hello,
Good news! I have just been informed by my PA that payment has been sent yesterday and you would unfailingly get it on or before friday. However, there has been a terrible mistake with the funds my PA sent, my PA made a mistake of sending the ticketing agents funds with yours. The total of $6,750 has been sent to you and apart from your funds, the overage funds is meant for booking my daughter's flight down to the US. In this event, you are subsequently required to send the overage funds back as soon as you get the payment as there is limited time left. I have informed the ticketing agent about this horrible mistake as well and have informed her to anticipate payment from you in the near future and she has requested the funds be sent to him via Western Union Money Transfer. Please, find below his information to which payment would be sent via Western Union to the ticketing agent:
NAME: AMANDA BOLADE
ADDRESS: 10 STEEL ROAD
LEYTON, E7 2AR
LONDON, UK.
As soon the funds have bent sent to the ticketing agent, my daughter's flight would be booked and make her way down to the US for her holidays and resume her lessons and i am hoping you would give her good lessons she would always remember. I await your anticipated response as soon as possible,
Terry Allen.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 1:13 PMYes, this person wants you to send them money, but won't send you any, or their check will bounce, and you'll be out whatever you sent. Don't have any more dealings with this person.
Or, if you'd like to respond, use this part of a response I have for potential fraud:
I am concerned now about the nature of this transaction, given that similar methods have been used for fraud. I'm sure you understand my concern given the current rash of fraudulent sales activities via internet.
I trust, therefore, that you'll understand my request for the following information prior to our continued negotiation:
1. Your mailing address.
2. Your HOME telephone number (no cell phones, please).
3. If you are from the EC, please include the number of your EC Identity Card.
I greatly look forward to hearing from you and remain,
With Very Highest Regards,
XXX (your name)
If you are unable or unwilling to provide this information, please contact me (via email) within the next 72 hours! In other cases, please note that your name, email address, and email routing information at the bottom of every email will be logged for legal archival information as possibly participating in felonious international activity and will be reported to international authorities (including INTERPOL). Please note that this email routing information is available through tracking services even if the information has been deleted via the email JAVA code manipulation.
Try it. It's a perfectly reasonable request. Send this to your person, and I doubt that you'll ever hear from her/him again!

Thanks you all sooooo much for being found on a google search! Is there anyway to bust this person? Have any friends in the UK? I haven't replied again yet...what should I do now?
He (if he is a he) was calling himself Lawrence Carter and his daughter AMANDA BOLADE.
This is todays entire message (maybe he should get a new PA...she's always making this mistake):
Thanks so much for being here!

Let me know if you have more information to add to the report. Like email addresses, other names used, mailing addresses, names on checks etc... that this person used.
I don't know if it will do any good but it makes me feel better too. We should also spred the word to other dance forums and mailing lists.

Thu, September 29, 2005 - 8:55 PMSomeone in Louisville Ky actually fell for this and was sent Counterfit money orders. They found it out after taking them to see if it was legit. SO they send you overpayment of nothing but counterfit and you give them all your money.
I cannot believe dancers are not more careful. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is.
Beware out there.

Re: e-mail scam - beware Amanda Bolade
Wed, October 5, 2005 - 9:40 AMI too filed a complaint with the IFCC. Here's a sample email:
Hello,
Sorry for the delay in my response, i have been out of town and just returned. I also want to thank you for the enthusiasm to have towards teaching my daughter. I have made arrangements with my a friend of mine whom my daughter would be staying with and she has promised to always drop and pick her up after lesson. I have passed your informations to my PA and he has promised to issue and send the payment to you unfailingly first thing monday morning (04/10/2005). He has informed me that, you would receive the payment two days after the issued date, so i am assuming you would be getting the payment in approximately 2 weeks from now, i hope this is okay with you. I would also be counting your word to give my daughter a very good and comprehensive lesson, you can get in touch with my daughter for any questions or directions you might want to give her via his email address at (tammie_carter87@yahoo.co.uk). I await your response, thanks.

Thu, October 20, 2005 - 4:19 PMSAY: I know this is a scam. Do not contact me again or I will take actions...
I know you cant take actions really, since this guy is anonimous, but it might scare him off. I had about 7 scam emails already, and always say that and they never mail me back..
-
-
Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, September 29, 2005 - 9:05 PMLet me take this opportunity to stress:
Never, NEV-er, NEVER send ANYBODY anything of value (e.g. money, artwork, whatever) until their payment to you clears. I know it should go without saying, but sometimes things that go without saying should be said. :)
And I know it sucks to get a bouncy check, so being aware of scams before they happen is good. If you fall for it, DON'T WORRY. Just don't cash their check (if you figure out beforehand that it is a scam and they still send you something) or send them anything.
And I got a completely different email with a different "PA" name, so there is more than one scam artist, or he/she is using more than one "dump" address. Don't forget, you can also go to snopes.com for many internet scams. -
-
Re: e-mail scam - beware
Fri, September 30, 2005 - 11:09 AMAlso:
www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/cashier.asp
Apparently banks are required to cash checks, cashier's checks and money orders within three days even if they turn out ot be fraudulent, so let me amend this to: if someone offers to send you a large sum and wants you to send them back the difference, don't do it even if the check does go through. :)

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Fri, October 7, 2005 - 6:39 AMI have received this (and similar scams) many times. It seems to be really increasing in the last two years.
A similar scam I've seen is where someone trys to hire you for a gig in another part of the country (New Orleans or New York) which would involve travel and hotel. I'm sorry to say that I've wasted time compiling estimates for such offers. The wording of the email invariable is almost word for word the same as a other previous attempts from "another person"...for completely different events in different locations! Now I always check my scam file to see if an email is worth replying to. For good reason I save all my scam email.
My husband is in Law Enforcement. Now I let him review all my scam email. He files them with the appropriate agencies for me. He explained that the scam is that they send you a payment for too much then expect you to send back the difference. The trick is that their payment is no good. So you are out both the "money" they sent you, AND the reimbursement they sent you.
For that purpose I have decided that IF I ever get an overpayment for any sort of gig or teaching, then I will consider that as mine to keep. This is a business where it is not uncommon for us to receive tips, after all. If my husband and a bank thinks it looks legit enough to deposit, I can always let it rest and see if it sticks.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Fri, October 7, 2005 - 12:56 PMI'm glad word is getting out. In addition to reporting the incident to the FBI or IFCC, if you actually receive a check or money order via the U.S. Mail, this is also mail fraud and you should report it to the United States Postal Service.
It's important to report the fraud and not just let it go. These agencies receive thousands of complaints a day and they prioritize which ones to investigate based on the number of complaints they receive. If no attempt is made to catch these people they will go on scamming innocent people. -
-
Re: e-mail scam - beware
Mon, October 10, 2005 - 9:51 AMHello All,
I wanted to let you all know that I was a victim of this scam. I am working with the FBI to resolve the issue, but I have no hope of getting any of the money back. All my emails to/from the infamous Terry Allen are saved and have been printed out and given to the FBI. The sad truth is that no one else can help. My local police department was called off the case, as it is federal. The FBI has little time to work on it, as the hurricane event is taking priority over standard items.
I believe that this presents a very dangerous problem though. Whether internationally or locally, the CASHIERS CHECK or indeed *any* kind of CHECK is not an acceptable form of payment anymore. Banks are required to provide money to you in three days (as mentioned above) despite the check not clearing. Checks can take forever to be cleared. The bank tells you to call the issuing bank before using money from someone you don't know to be sure that the check is cleared. However, even if the issuing bank tells you the check is cleared, they are *STILL* not liable for the funds given to you (temporarily) if the check is determined to be counterfeit later. This holds for bogus cashiers checks and personal checks. And the amount of time that the banks have to determine that a check is counterfeit is up to five years. So, any money you think you have can be pulled back up to five years from the date received (!!!).
Basically, in the future I will only accept cash or wire transfers as forms of payment. Nothing else is reliable, and after having lost a considerable amount of money, I am no longer willing to take the risk of "trusting" someone when there are so many scammers out there. From the time you deposit a check into your account, *YOU* are liable for that money, not any bank, when the funds don't come through from someplace else.
Good luck to you all. I am very glad this thread was posted. If anyone has any further questions about Terry Allen or this scam, I am happy to help if I can. It is important that this scam does not happen to any more people!!!
Note that I did not wire transfer any money, but I sent a cashiers check to a person in Maryland, who then cashed the check. This is a HUGE fraud ring, and I hope the perpetrators are caught. Another nice twist, the person is Maryland is supposedly deaf, so you don't ever get to talk to a person on the end of the line, just the operator exchange. The money cannot be retrieved because in the law's eyes that person did not do anything wrong (ha ha ha). -

Wed, October 12, 2005 - 8:09 AMYeah, I started receiving these, and other scam letters at the beginning of this last summer. I told him to go **** himself, and that he should be ashamed of what he is doing. Haven't heard from him since :)
I hope the FBI can stop this eventually, but don't count on it. I think it'll be up to us to get the word out to other dancers. -

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 11:06 AMGeez Vashti,
I didn't know that you were a victim of this. I wish I could have warned you sooner, maybe we will get a minute to talk about it this weekend.
My fake cashiers check looked like it was from the "Teachers Credit Union" and the post mark on the envelope was from Grand rapids MI USA
There is a big investigation going on with the TCU because they have gotten about 600 bogus checks. They think that it's all coming out of Nigira, I am not so sure. I think the money may be being used to fund terrorism. You might think that our government would be trying to do something to stop these types of scams because they are a HUGE problem right now.
Best of luck to all!

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Sat, October 22, 2005 - 4:46 PMI have checked the emails that have been forwarded to me (thank you, ladies! ) and found that these emails are coming from Lagos, Nigeria. Nigerian scams are notorious and it is between the 3d. and 5th. national income producing industry of the country. The scam gangs are so powerful and dangerous that the police itself is afraid of them.
Even though the chances of the FBI being able to do something about it are slim (since they don't have jurisdiction outside the US), it is by reporting these emails to both the FBI and to your host as spam that the word gets around and through information we are better protected.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Sat, November 5, 2005 - 5:56 PMI am so glad I read this thread... Actually, I was never contacted about the lessons, but a guy did try to get me into a similar scam with a wedding. First he was asking me to quote him for a WHOLE day... (24 hours dancing??), after a few emails back and forth, he decided to hire me for a regular 30 minute set. After I quoted him my price he gave me this whole story that he had hired another bellydancer for the wedding but that the wedding got postponed and now the dancer couldn't make it, and so that's why he was hiring me. He said the other dancer (from LA) would be sending me a check for $3000 and that I should keep my fee and send him the difference via Western Union. Of course, I stopped replying and he dissapeared. I kept the emails for a while, but ended up deleting them.
I always wondered what was behind this, and I now understand...
I think is extremely important that we spread the word about things like these and help each other out.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 12:26 PMHey everyone... I just wanted to give everyone the heads up on another e-mail I got today that follows this pattern. You all may be aware that these kinds of e-mails are scams, but some might, so here it is. The errors are also so egregious that they're funny:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I am Mrs Tamia Woods from Belgium. My Daugther(sharon)is coming to stay for some couple of weeks in the UK and he loves music, I want you to help me teach ing him Belly Dance. I got your profile from a music teaching directory. Note: my son Alan is just 14 years old and he is a beginner. So, please teach him well. The arrangement for his accomodation has already been made near you , so that the lesson will be confortable for the both of you. He will arrive there on december 3rd 2005. Let me know your charges cost per month in other for me to arrange for his payment before he travells
down to your side. The payment will be made with check from my associate. He will be staying there for 3 months and I want him to learn for that 3 months.
Please Advise back on:
1. The cost for the lesson (For the 3 months) and books (if needed)
2. The complete details for the payment(Name address and cell phone number).
I look up to your reply regarding that.
Best regards -

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 12:40 PMOh, too funny! I just got this exact same one, too! I've also received one from Elizabeth Woods.
I sent her back a reply absolutely overflowing with sarcasm...I'm sure it'll be lost on whoever reads it, but at least it was fun for me!
Great thread, glad so many people are aware of these nasty scams. -

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Thu, November 17, 2005 - 1:25 PMThere was a little feature about this whole scam on the local news last night (SF Bay Area). they even interviewed a local dancer, Sandra Troutman (a friend of mine), who admitted she almost fell for it.
It's not just limited to dancers. Variations on it have occurred in all sorts of other fields, online auctions, etc.

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 7:18 AMNew today. They have changed their story. I hope no one falls for the new one. They keep sending these to the same people over and over again. How many times do they think one person will fall for it? I have noticed that their first contact is a "bulk mailing"
Here is todays:
Hello ,....I would like to make an enquiry regarding the
services you render as a dance tutor.I got your mailing information
after a search through a few reputable websites.I have a teenage
daughter that has just finished her 'A' levels exams and my family is
relocating to the USA by the 3rd week in December. She has shown a high
level of interest in unique dance such as the belly dancing even
though she is a novice and has never had the time to attend classes.I
and my wife have decided to encourage her by giving her a chance to
brush up her skills with the necessary lessons.
Can you please tell me a few things about your services? What are
your dance specialities?Which would you suggest for a teenager?Do you
have a dance studio where your students have to attend? What are the
lesson sessions like per week(How many hours a day/How many times a
week)? Is there a minimum time duration for your tutoring? What are the
fees for the lessons? Can you pay home visits or is your dance studio
located somewhere in town? Please furnish me with as much information
as you can because i would like to book your services starting the
last week in December.
I am a very busy man and i might not be making the trip with my
family until next year so i would be glad if we can both sort all
arrangements out together before their arrival in the USA.In regards
your fees,...i would be glad to have a USA certified check sent to you
as deposit payment as soon as we have come to some agreement.
Thank you and hope to hear from you soon,
Regards,
T. Bradley.

LOL, sounds like they use the same text with a few differences in it, looks just like the one I got from a German, with the name "Rosemary" :-)

Guess they're not only targeting bellydancers

Re: e-mail scam - beware
Sun, November 27, 2005 - 8:25 PMI went ahead and replied to him to get a response. I wanted a response to prove scamming when I submit my complaint. Otherwise, it looks like a harmless request for information. When he replies back with the whole "we'll send you a check" thing - I turn it in to the authorities.
