Hi,
My dance partner, Misha, and I are looking for some romantic music for a special valentines day performance at a restaurant. Any suggestions? We aren't afraid to be campy! We have searched itunes with no success... :(
Thank you so much!

"Khaliji" by Naser Musa and Souhail Kaspar
It's a collection of Arabic Love Songs

Most Arabic and Turkish songs that are appropriate for belly dance are love songs. Truly. :D
For something upbeat that can have TONS of camp- try Amina and Sa'ad's "El Hantour". The lyrics are here:
        www.serpentine.org/yasmin/Hantour.html
This actually has a lot to "act out" if you choose.

Alf Leylah Wa Leylah (A thousand nights and a night) and Enta Omri (You are my Life) are both supremely romantic love songs originally by Oum Kolsoum. You'll find tons of instrumental versions of both of them.

Another idea- go to youtube.com search for "arabic english translations". Sift through.

I'm actually looking for something in English. I'm hoping the audience will know it's a love song - something like "I put a spell on you" covered by Natasha Atlas.
What other artists have done covers like that? Those songs would be campy, and the audience would get it right away.
Thank you for the suggestions so far! I'm definitely going to check those out too.

    hi ayperi,

maybe try gene loves jezebel form their discover album or the immigrant album.
on discover there's the song "white horse" and also "worth waiting for".
and trust me, these guys are romantic welshmen but can camp it up with the best of 'em as well.
    enjoy. genelovesjezebel.com

What style are you planning on dancing?

Mediterranean Hookah Lounge, where we're dancing, organizes its sets so that the first set is Oriental style and the second is fusion style (artist's choice).

Our idea right now is to do our first set in red cabaret costumes with Middle Eastern love songs with English lyrics (if possible). We both really like ME dance pop, so we're thinking Tarkan, Natasha Atlas, etc...

Our second set will be a fusion of West Coast tribal fusion with our own humor. We plan to start with "Love Song" covered by Niyaz, then break into a rock song (undetermined yet), "Fever" covered by a local Middle Eastern fusion group called Reptile Palace Orchestra (check them out of you get time! www.reptilepalaceorchestra.com/), and then finishing with a drum solo we always do.

Any suggestions or ideas? I really appreciate hearing all the input!

      Thanks!

        hi ayperi,

i might have been waaay off the mark with my gene loves jezebel suggestion after reading what you are planning.
however, they are still a cool welsh band with a great song called "desire". :)

also, a nice veil dance is bryan ferry's "slave to love". it's kinda dreamy sounding.

good luck and let us know how it all went down. :)

What style of dance are we talking?

My gut feeling is that having music evocative of love would be better than music that is out and out announcing its a love song. There is something to the amazing power of emotive dancing and mysterious lyrics that get you right at your core, where having it driven home in plain English can be a little overdone.
