I've always loved tribe. It's been one of my favorite forums. But recently, I feel it's dying. People no longer respond to posts.
Sometimes posts take a while to appear. Sometimes you think someone new has responded and in actuallity it's a post you posted months ago.
But really, tribe really seems dead lately. Is it because of the technical issues or has it just outlived its usefullness?
I'm kind of floored for example in the belly dance video tribe that it's rare for someone to actually watch the videos posted. I would have thought that tribe to be thriving!!!! I jusr don't get it.

Re: Is tribe dying?
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:21 PMI don't think it's dying, but I do think it's prone to flakiness.
I personally cannot watch videos when I'm online at work so I don't even get on to tribe (big brother and all). I wait until I get home and, if I have time, check out postings, vids, etc. when time permits. When I do watch vids, I don't always (a) have time to comment or (b) have a comment to make. I think silence is just that...silence. It doesn't necessarily mean nobody's out there or nobody's watching... just not much to say (or time to say it).
Make any sense?
(PS) I always enjoy your point of view. You have a lot of experience in this field!

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 6:55 AMwell, I've always enjoyed tribe very much, since I do like discussing things; but if you're like me you belong to quite a few tribes so can't get to all of them all the time -
also am now keeping up with fb & twitter a little, so less time for actual discussions! where WILL people go to discuss things? or will we forget how? sometimes I wonder -
tribe's downtime really doesn't help. They should get it fixed right or just close it down.

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 8:35 AMIMHO as a web professional (not associated with Tribe), given the huge competition, the chronic server problems, the lack of updates to any real functionality, the already dwindled community and what looks to be very stagnant growth in membership and dead Tribes. I'd say Tribe could limp along for another 6 months, but I really think its past its due date and wouldn't be surprised if it just disappeared one day.
Sad, but I am actually surprised it has held on this long.

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:22 PMI really hope not. I enjoy having discussion forums. I use FB a lot, too, but it does not give me my discussion fix.

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 9:52 PMI do think some movers & shakers in some of the tribes have moved on, and that hurts tribe as a whole- I've chopped my tribe list bunches due to inactive tribes- but honestly, I can get onto tribe more reliably than facebook, for some reason (maybe fb just doesn't like me!) and there are still a few active tribes that I really appreciate. regional tribes seem to be doing better at the mo. -

Re: Is tribe dying?
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 2:46 PMSadly, due to the above mentioned reasons, tribe is certainly much slower than it used to be.
There IS a Biz of Belly Dance facebook group- and I think there are some new discussion options over there. I'll check it out and report back. This tribe has been an AMAZING resource and I'd love to continue helping facilitate the sharing of knowledge for professional dancers. :D -

Re: Is tribe dying?
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 9:48 PMI think so. I like tribe better than any of the other groups, but most of the WV gang has moved on to ning, which I hate. I'm still hanging on with tribe, but I'm not sure for how much longer.

No, tribe is not dead.
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 12:14 PMCostuming tribes are still very active and useful. -

Re: No, tribe is not dead.
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 4:10 PMreally- which ones? all 3 costuming tribes I was on are pretty much dead- every once in a while someone pops in to try to sell something, but no actual conversations. -

Here ya go.
Facebook Biz of Belly Dance.
Hmm...there IS a "Discussion" option now that was not there a year ago.
Please head on over there. If tribe continues to slow then we'll have an alternative.
We'll stay here though as well. :)

Well, if this tribe dies...
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 2:34 PMIf this tribe dies, I'l always remember it as a great source of useful info. Just last night daughter called me from the parking lot of a gig ... the customer had decided to film her dancing for advertising purposes.... and she wanted to know how to handle it. Thanks to BizOfBD, I knew exactly what to tell her. So there you are. Thank you. -

Re: Well, if this tribe dies...
Sun, November 8, 2009 - 6:19 PMI just posted this on the Belly Dance Video Thread:
Sigh. Unfortunately I think Tribe is dead. Maybe some of the outages had something to do with it, I don't know. To me, it was the people that attracted me and lured me. I know some have abandoned the internet posting forums altogether because of the heat. Others have opened up new networks.
I'm sad, I loved tribe. I used to be pretty user friendly too.
Some forums are still going strong but so many of them are too inactive. Did tribe grow to big? Is it too scattered? Should we reduce tribe forums to make this thing work?
All I know is most of my friends don't check in to tribe anymore and some tribe members have started their own forums on facebook, etc.
Frankly, I'm tired of posting new videos or new info and not getting a response for months on end. It takes me hours to convert a VHS tape to youtube. -

Re: Well, if this tribe dies...
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:12 AMHey Norma,
I don't think Tribe is dead. It is certainly less active than before, but those that are here are still having quality discussions. I had to take a bit of a break from it for a year or so because of school work but I am very happy to be back and participating.
To me, Tribe is kind of like the party after the throngs have left and the evening settles into interesting conversation with those that stayed...
It will be what we make of it - and I've been telling people that there's good stuff going on here in hopes that they will be either lured back or try it for the first time.
Maybe it's the times I've logged on, but I can't say I've had huge outage problems - yes, a few here and there - but nothing's perfect. Certainly not Facebook. The group format on Facebook just isn't conducive for this kind of exchange anyway.
Our MECDA chapter was discussing this last week and it seems that Tribe's structure and format are unique. Nobody knew of another social networking site that had the same interest group based features plus "friends" features.
Bhuz has great forums, but you don't "belong" to them so it's hard to keep up with new threads unless you spend LOTS of time there. I have my GoogleReader set to pick up key bellydance words and put them on my reader frame so I can scan topics I might want to read. This has made Bhuz more time efficient for me personally. It's still not Tribe though...
As long as it's here, I will continue to log on, read and post!

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 3:32 PMTribe has had too many downtimes, which is really annoying or it didn't work well like not showing a lot of topics or so and then it has been too slow, not much life there...I moved to bhuz where I met a lot of people recently that came over from tribe.

Re: Is tribe dying?
Fri, November 13, 2009 - 7:04 AMDying? It's already dead!
At least 40% of the time when I try to get on tribe.net, the server is down for maintenance or having technical issues. Naturally, we're all having to migrate elsewhere. -

Re: Is tribe dying?
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 3:57 PMLet's just say tribe is real sick.
It could rally though........... or not.
It certainly isn't as active as it once was. -

Re: Is tribe dying?
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 10:21 PMHope tribe is not going to die. In the last couple of years I have used it as a learning resource in my FCBD training. I am now completed the teacher training, and it tribe had not been around, I would have found it quite difficult. As it is, I don't have a teacher near me, so it was workshops, videos, youtube and tribe net that got me there.
Sweating bullets. Hope tribe revives.
Cheers, Susan

Re: Is tribe dying?
Wed, November 18, 2009 - 1:00 PMSadly, it's been well over a month since I've checked tribe. I moderate a few tribes that are totally dead now and I have no idea how to just close those down. Today, I noticed that FB is now sending out notifications when someone posts in a group (a function that they did not used to have) and I fear that may be the death blow to tribe. Only time will tell. -

Re: Is tribe dying?
Today, 3:26 AMI stopped checking in for awhile too, mostly because tribe was done a lot. I haven't had a problem getting in lately though. However, several of my friends have left tribe. I'm going to try to make more of an effort to check in more.
