I have noticed that when shows accept children as performers, then the parents or troupe leaders become very obnoxious about demanding that their troupes be given performance slots earlier in the evening, rather than later, due to the children needing earlier bedtimes than adults. In addition, the instant the kids have left the stage, their families leave. Performers who appear later in the show then find themselves dancing to a lot of empty chairs.
Is that fair/appropriate? Should organizers communicate and enforce a rule stating that, although it's okay for kids to perform, there will be NO special accommodation of providing early time slots for them?
And how do you, as organizers, handle the issue of audience members who leave the instant their pet dancer has finished her performance?

Re: More on show organizing - children in shows?
Tue, May 5, 2009 - 3:38 PMOn the first issue, I would say to make it clear that there is to be no special treatment. On the second (which is a pet peeve of mine), I say make them sit in the back. They're obviously not there to see the show. -

Re: More on show organizing - children in shows?
Wed, May 6, 2009 - 5:00 PMI have only had children of MY dancers in my shows, so I haven't had people leave early or had requests that I didn't agree with.
That being said, I would definitely want the children to go early and leave because if the kids get tired, they might get really cranky and disruptive. But I would ask to know their plans in advance and have them sit in the back if they were leaving. Not all kids would act that way, but you can't ever tell.
I have never had a problem with the kids in my shows.
