If anyone could give me some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.
I've been painting and dying silk for a long time now, but just as a hobby and for gifts so far. right now, I'm painting backdrops for several shows on my own dime - one of the sphinx with a sunset and pyramids, and one is of an interior temple scene. They are both 9x18 painted silk. As I get them finished I'll post pictures (each takes about 2 1/2 weeks to paint + supplies sooo...), what would you think is a fair price to rent them out would be? I'd like to recoup my money a bit, but am totally unfamiliar with this type of scenario. Do you think anyone would even be interested in renting them for their bigger shows?
Thanks to any suggestions.

Re: Backdrops question
Tue, April 7, 2009 - 3:30 PMI have no idea, but it's an interesting idea. As an organizer, I'd consider it.

Re: Backdrops question
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 9:52 AMWow! His backdrops are spectacular. Mine aren't nearly as big (his look to be *quite* a bit larger). Mine would fit better in a smaller setting where they could be attached to pipe and drape or a smaller (community) theatre setting, they are "only" 9x18, after all. I'd have to adjust price-wise accordingly. (Time to crunch some numbers - both for size, time, replacement value, wear and tear, plus other considerations). I'm hemming the sides and bottom, but am attaching satin ribbon across the top so that they can be repeatedly used without damaging the actual silk. -

Re: Backdrops question
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 6:29 PMTrust me, Jenn - You *don't* have enough to pay me to do another one, lol. Rent though? yes! You'll see them next week at Raks Mystique - they'll be behind the "Cairo" and "Memphis" stages. Goodness - now I've just realized I forgot to post the ad for the Festival - ah well. Okay. here goes. 4 bands, sandstorm medc and Jenn as our defacto guest - just because =0), circus acts, local artists and vendors with locally made goods, ethnic food, lots of good vibes - what else can I say for Dayton Ohio on April 18th. =) Whew!
They are turning out like huge water color paintings. Huge grins. -

Re: Backdrops question
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 5:56 AMI was going to take pics once they are hung on site - since they are on a huge roller rack/suspension system right now, you just don't get the full effect... Going out to paint some more - Each one is taking over 80 hours to complete - hack hack - so I'm a little goggle eyed while pulling choreo together for the show, too. Making baklava next friday for the show as well... just shoot me - when will I learn not to bite off more than I can chew, lol.
Hugs and see you soon... and thanks for the pat on the back. It makes me so happy to find out others think I do beautiful work. =0)

Re: Backdrops question - www.LiteTrix.com
Tue, April 14, 2009 - 12:02 AMSince I haven't purchased nor do I sell backdrops, I don't personally know the answer to this question either...
BUT...
I work regularly with a local fellow named Pat Murphy at LiteTrix (www.litetrix.com) -- besides theatrical lighting, he makes and rents backdrops nationwide... you can check his pricing online or perhaps give him a buzz (he's way busy, but a good guy :-) I think his "Terms and Conditions" page has pricing...
Good luck!

Re: Backdrops question - collaboration
Tue, April 14, 2009 - 12:04 AMPS It looks like you're in Ohio... if you'd be interested in connecting with another dancer/artist in the NorthEast who recently contacted me about painting backdrops, PM me... maybe you two could collaborate and start a new venture! -

Re: Backdrops question - collaboration
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 6:12 AMThanks for the link - really wonderful work, and helpful information, btw. I will definitely drop you a PM. I'm busting butt for the next few months, but will be getting pictures of my backdrops tomorrow (when I finally get to hang them). I learned a lot pulling these together, and the rack suspension system my hubby built for me is incredible, so I am really looking forward to doing more of them. It has been incredibly satisfying doing the renderings and then pulling together these backdrops.
I'll be posting pics next week. =)

Re: Backdrops question
Mon, April 20, 2009 - 9:42 AMWe survived the weekend.
projects.daytondailynews.com/cac...orm/
You can go and see a picture of me doing a cane piece with one of the backdrops as well. Unfortunately, No one took a picture of the other stage with the sphinx/setting sun/storm rolling in/pyramids one I did. That's alright - I have to iron, sew on edging/install grommets, so will take pictures when they are laid out. Enjoy. =) -
