My midwife told me "what takes 9 months to go out takes 9 months to go back." I'd say recovery from C-section will add more of a challenge...I'd also add that this mind-set does not apply for most actresses in Hollywood. (poor things)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I teach begginers so I shouldn't have to many problems showing the break down of the moves. The doctor has cleared me to dance/workout. I am excited about getting back full swing into dance again I guess i just need to realize that I will have to work to get back to the level I was at and it will take some time.

I went back as soon as my doc cleared me at my 6wk postpartum -- but I didn't have a c-section... call your ob/gyn and ask!!! I would think, like Fabala suggested, that the longer you wait the more difficult it will become. I found most are pretty forgiving when you tell them you just had a baby and are retraining your body -- it doesn't make you less effective as an instructor, it just makes your more honest about your own limitations and most people will find that motivating. Do you have an advanced student you could ask to join you to demonstrate/drill any moves you still find challenging in exchange for the extra class time? That way after you demonstrate you can continue to drill the technique without pushing yourself into an injury.
Blessings,

I'd been dancing for three years by the time I had gotten pregnant with my son. His birth was WAY easier than my daughters (three years previously). It was such an easy birth, I had both children with no drugs... natural.

I had a tubaligation two weeks after he was born so it took a little longer to get back to it then I expected. It was about a month before I started attending classes again and it was a about two months after that that I went back to performing. I never had any problems and always under the watchful eye of my doctor. I think that is why I went pretty much right back to being health as an ox.

But if you've had a c-section, well that is much more intense. I would discuss it with your doctor first see if he has any more restrictions on what you can and can't do. You may also have to retrain the muscles you use for undulations, after all they cut into those things... they are still a little stressed out.

I was in great shape before having a c-section with my second child. It literally took 2 years to really regain most of my muscle strength. I still can't do backbends like I could before the c-section and that was nearly 10 years ago. HOWEVER, I was going to college at the time of my daughters birth and was training at a hobbyist level at the time. I took the easy-does-it path and well....just let me say...please don't delay re-strengthening your core - if it gets weak (and a c-section will do it to ya like nothing else), it can have a pronounced effect on your back - and that's no fun at all.

The exercise that I found really helpful post c-section was cobra pose - but please, please start out VERY gently - the aim is to prevent adhesions during the scarring process, not put so much stress on the incision that it causes ruptures. But if you delivered in September, you should be okay to begin. Seriously think about getting into a yoga class (one for seniors, or even better - post-partum moms).

It took a LOOONG time to get the core muscles back in shape. I suffered some muscle confusion and my hip flexors began doing the work of the lower abdominals (they are actually strong enough to pull me up to sitting - my pilates teacher was amazed). But if I may shamelessly plug Gerson Khur's DVD 'Core training for bellydancers' his vid was very helpful in getting me sorted out. I wish I'd had it 9 years ago.

To the women who dance and have given birth how long did it take for you to get back into intense dancing? I am trying to decide after giving birth by c-section in sept if I am ready to take on students again in March. I am in classes myself and get sore like I never did before baby(undulations are still pretty harnd on the abs).

Any sugestions for getting ready for teaching again?
