Hello everyone! I am on the hunt for some good current Persian pop music to add to the end of my dance show at a local Iranian restaurant. Any suggestions for music that would be a hit with a family crowd at a mid-range restaurant venue?

Thanks in advance!

Good question! I'm not so sure about the more specific styles of music as Persian pop, so I'd be interested to hear from someone who does.
Although I would suggest looking at maqam.com :)

I haven't had much luck with maqam.com for finding Persian music, although their seleciton of Arabic music is excellent!

I know a lot of my Persian friends go to www.bia2.com and I have downloaded music from them too. My only caution would be to be carefull with some of the music, if you download any of the rap it can be just as lude as American rap. What I do when I perform for a Persian crowd is include a Baba Karam at the end (complete with hat and scarf). My favorite version is by Mehrdad.

I buy my Persian music from E-world Records, Caltex Records and Amazon has a few. Real Persian music has the 6/8 beat which is becoming more and more rare among the popular dance music, otherwise you get a lot of electronic base and rap and well it's just not that interesting or inspiring. But it would work if you are tagging it on to your Arabic set and expect that people might get up to dance.

You might try searching for Artists to get you more hits. A few of my favorites: Pouya, Omid, Morteza, Leila Forouhar, Said Mohammadi, Andy (he is more a fusion artist but has some nice Persian and Armenian pieces), and Mehrdad Asemani is my absolute favorite. Be careful with some of his music, some his songs have political/social undertones.

I second Mehrdad's Baba Karam, one of my signature pieces. It's modern yet has that distinct Baba Karam flavor, nice and slow 6/8. Will make the Persian crowd go wild, just take your time with it and relish the rhythm and movements. If you know of other pop versions of Baba Karam like Mehrdad's, I'd like to know.
I agree Maqam and other belly dance music vendors do not really have good Persian music selection though you might find some educational/appreciation CDs, but not really suitable for dance. I think it's getting harder and harder to find real (good) Persian dance /pop music, especially new stuff.
