I have it with the company that hosts Shira.net. Over the course of fhe past year, I've had a steady stream of problems that included a 3-day outage, merger with another company that broke a bunch of the web site management tools, moving their tech support to a phone center in India whose reps refuse to open trouble tickets when I report stuff that doesn't work, having their IP addresses for their email servers blacklisted by major ISP's such as AT&T due to suspicion of them being spammer friendly, had poor usage statistics, etc.
So, avoid Valueweb and Hostway like the plague. Valueweb was the original company, Hostway is the one that merged with it.
Now, for my question:
Can you recommend a good, reliable, competent web hosting company? I need one who:
1. Offers phone support
2. Can handle a large, popular web site like Shira.net
3. Provides informative statistics on site usage
4. Lets you set up your own email addresses, including ones with forwarding and autoresponders
5. Lets you use pop and smtp to both SENDand receive your email even though your Internet access is provided by someone else (Earthlink loses on this criterion - I can receive, but not send)
So, thoughts? Recommendations?

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:22 AMI'm considering Yahoo and GoDaddy.
Any horror stories or warnings about either of these? Others I should look at? -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:38 AMI just had to deal with Yahoo for a client of mine...and they were a royal PAIN. It was a minor domain request regarding nameservers, and not hosting per se...but their support was so poor that I wouldn't use them for anything after what we went through. Countless transfers to departments that couldn't help us...hours on the phone. Blah. Yeah...I'm not impressed with my recent Yahoo experience.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 12:07 PMI use BlueHost for my studio's website, and I've been very pleased with them. I find their site easy to navigate, and simply set up.
I've not had to call them very much, but when I did, it was a very polite well-spoken guy who was able to answer any questions that I had.
My sister and I have GoDaddy for our personal website...and I find them awful. Their site is so cluttered and un-intuitive that I can't figure out how to update my website. The way ours is set up, it apparently takes 2 passwords to get to actually update your page...and you have to wade through so much crap on their website that what you're looking for is completely buried.
I could not in good conscience recommend GoDaddy. -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:50 PMmake that two against go daddy... same problems here.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 4:51 AMI find GoDaddy's control panel navigation to be clumsy. It's difficult to find and doesn't have all the features that my host has. I can't stand having to use it when I help my friend with her website. Their customer service is good though, from what she says.
I use Hostmonster for my website and love it.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:34 AMI resell through hostgator...and I love them. Their phone support in the US and live chat options have been very useful. And they helped transfer 30 websites for me...so I'm sure they'd help you. www.hostgator.com

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 10:46 AMI know I wouldn't recommend powweb anymore, and once I'm done touring this summer, I'm transferring my websites elsewhere. Possibly over to hostmonster.com where I have the Gothla US website - that seems to be pretty good.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 2:25 PMI've been using yahoo without any issue for a little over a year now.
I don't want to give any of my business to godaddy because of their usage of disgusting misogynistic commercials, but that's just me. I've also heard some not so great things about their service.
-
Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 3:16 PMI used to use Yahoo, but I wasn't impressed. The tools were hard to navigate and the services weren't the best. We recently switched to VodaHost, and so far have been very pleased. We did have an issue with a missing password, but I think that was a problem with one person, not the service as a whole.
Good luck!

Godaddy
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 6:39 PMI moved from Brinkster several years ago when their support went to hell. Picked GoDaddy and have stayed with them. GoDaddy itemizes everything, like the vet, but for me it is a good deal AND the support is great AND their servers stay up. However, our website and your website probably have entirely different requirements :) -

GO Green!
Wed, April 8, 2009 - 7:21 PMwww.aiso.net/technology-network.html
"Total Eco Web Servers" are powered by the sun, air and water.
That is just wonderful.... I am not our web mistress - but I have never heard her complain about the service.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 6:36 AMI'm not sure about all your requirements, but I use gkg.net, afer switching from godaddy (they were so spammy & irritating). I like gkg but I"m not a big pc person, so caveat -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 8:36 AMThanks for all the great recommendations on this thread! I need to make my mind up very soon, because my current web hosting contract expires at the end of May.
Interesting that Yahoo has poor support. My www.bellydanceplus.com web site is on Yahoo, and has been quite happy there. I've never needed to phone Yahoo for support, so I haven't had experience with that facet of their service yet. After my abysmally bad support experience with Hostway, I want to avoid choosing someone else who will be just as bad.
Hmmm, lots of complaints about GoDaddy on this thread. That doesn't bode well!
Any other suggestions?
Which web hosting companies have really great, informative statistics that are easy to access and reliably gathered? -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 9:56 AMHi Shira. If you want a wealth of statistics, sign on to Google Webmaster and Google Analytics. They are free and you even get stats if someone in Ulan Bator is visiting your site. You just need to pop some meta tag code onto your pages. -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Sat, April 11, 2009 - 10:55 AMYeah, Google Stats Rock. Easy to use and lots of good data.
BTW I love networksolutions for hosting, not the cheapest but they are rock solid and have lots of canned apps, extensions, galleries etc.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, April 13, 2009 - 12:27 PMI have indeed signed up for Google Analytics. The problem is that my web site consists of over 1,200 individual html pages, and was created back in 1997 when concepts such as templates and CMS's didn't yet exist.
I'm currently 34% done with converting my web site from the old yellow design to the new blue design, and one aspect of the new design is that I'm using Dreamweaver templates to manage all my web pages. So now, with Dreamweaver, changing something is as easy as changing the template, telling Dreamweaver to update all pages based on that template, and then ftp-ing the updated files to the web. My Dreamweaver templates do contain the html code needed for Google Analytics, but my problem is that 66% of my web site has NOT yet been converted and does NOT yet have the html in it.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Sun, April 12, 2009 - 3:14 PMHey Shira... Must have missed this thread before!! My hubby and I use Dreamhost for all of our accounts... and we run 7 websites from it on one account!! Support is good, the interface is very clear and easy to use, and there are lots of goodies that come with the account. LOVE THEM!!
I really have no experience with other hosting services. We've only used Dreamhost. Hubby did his homework and we've been satisfied customers ever since!

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, April 13, 2009 - 12:52 PMA big reason why I'm wanting to move my web site to a new provider is that my current company's phone support has gone from "pretty good" to "horrid". The reason is that the company merged with another, and the new company's call center is the one that will be used for providing the support. The call center in question is in Bulgaria. Now, the people I've dealt with are fine in their English-speaking skills, but they are severely poor with respect to their customer service mentality. Every time I've dealt with them since the switch-over, the call has degenerated into my literally shouting at them with demands that they take my problem seriously. And I've had a lot of technical problems since the switchover due to the merged company making some technical changes that have caused stuff on my site to quit working. It's bad enough when your ftp interface doesn't work, it's even worse when the customer service guy says, "Well, I tried it, and it works for me, so there's no problem and I don't see a need to open a ticket."
I'm also very concerned about the fact that the people in the call center are able to easily pull up a report showing them the passwords for all my email accounts and ftp account. I guess it has been this way ever since I started hosting my web site with this company, but I didn't find out about it until my most recent round of technical problems brought on by the reconfiguration they've been doing in their data center. Although I assume most people in their support organization wouldn't misuse the knowledge, it only takes one bad apple to use my password for dishonorable purposes.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 8:27 PMAbout ixwebhosting; a website I have is being hosted through them and we keep having serious hacker problems. Folks visiting the site keep getting virus alerts. ix doesn't semm able to keep their stuff secure. They keep saying they fixed it, but then we get another complaint.
Just my experience with them. YMMV

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 12:11 PMmoniker.com and designchemistry.com both rock. GoDaddy is the spawn of "basement cat" - only a heck of a lot uglier. Hope this helps.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 11:35 AMHiya!
Have 5 sites I maintain, and have been web application developer in my ‘day job’ for 14 years so I have pretty high expectations of what is good service, proper uptime, and know what I need.
As of November of last year I moved to Dreamhost, and they are so far meeting my expectations. Variety of packages, and languages supported. Nice built in gallery, blog, etc, for those that don’t want to build it themselves, and the built it module are really easy to use. If you want to build it yourself, they support MySQL, and a variety of web languages and architectures.
My troupe site uses the Gallery, which I have embedded into an iframe here: tribalwallah.net/events/gallery.html - so nice to not have to build all those pages by hand anymore!
Before Dreamhost I went through 4 hosts, in about 8 years. I can recall the past two that I have used the following with varying degrees of success (can’t seem to recall the names of the other two I used):
Daily Razor –they went from good to very poor customer service, originally choose this because I need Cold Fusion hosting
1&1 – good customer service and good Linux based backend, good if you want MySQL, PHP, Perl ,etc – moved because I need something they didn’t offer (Cold Fusion) -

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 11:42 AMOh Sheesh! Don't you know, I posted a bunch of new pictures last night, but now the gallery seems to be down.
Just sent t trouble ticket in, let's see how fast they are at replying :)

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 12:35 PMI don't know if they meet all of your requirements, but webskinz.com offers hosting. They have great service and are a small company based in FLA. I've had great luck with them.

Re: Whom do you use for web hosting?
Mon, May 4, 2009 - 12:42 PMI use Netfirms and have no complaints.
1. I've never needed their phone support, so I can't advise to that, but I've never had an outage or any other technical problems either (knocking wood)...
2. They have a nice personal/SOHO hosting plan, but for something more robust, they have an upgrade plan for $8.95 a month. I find the personal plan would probably work fine for me, but I chose the Advantage plan for future growth potential, and because I could have unlimited domains. It may be perfect for your site, but, if not, there's an even bigger plan after that.
3. They provide stats on usage.
4. You can set up 10, 500 or 1,000 email addresses, depending on what plan you go with. I believe you can set up forwarding, but I don't know about autoresponders.
5. I use POP and SMTP with my Outlook client using my home ISP (Verizon).
The plan also came with free decent web-editing software, NetObjects Fusion.
www.netfirms.com/web-hosting/ has details and a plan comparison.
