I am in the midst of putting together a CD project of music for belly dance (and hopefully interesting for plain old listening as well). The costs of putting out a professional level recording independently are fairly high, therefore I am seeking oout a business loan. Explaining to a loan officer about the "viability of a product in the belly dance market" is somewhat challenging without concrete facts and figures. Does anyone on this forum have any suggestions for links to articles that I could quote from, statistics of retail sales of music and accessories, or other helpful information regarding the current and near future financial aspects of the belly dance world? I am sincere in my musical efforts, but like many of you, I am trying to interface my art with the world of commerce, and trying to learn the language to be able to do so effectively.
Thanks,
Nathan

Re: statistics and articles
Fri, August 12, 2005 - 3:07 AMHi Nathan,
maybe the prodution companies for other oriental musicians can give you the facts and figures, or other more free lance musicians? Try some research on the web, you should get the company names and other details there.
I can't give you any more help, that's how I would start with this question.

Re: statistics and articles
Mon, August 15, 2005 - 2:03 PMIt's all about the spin. If I were you I wouldn't concentrate on the "belly dancer" part of it, but the Asian part of your music. There's a huge Asian demographic in this world. (Heck, between China and India, you've got 2 billion people and counting) With a market this big for your product, maybe the loan officer would be more interested. After all, I think the chances of your loan officer EVER understanding what you are trying to do is VERY slim. They just want to know if it's viable and feasible.
Also, look for lenders that specilize in loans for artists.

Thu, August 25, 2005 - 9:48 PMi don't know anything about you, your music or this particular project, but i've been in what might be a similar place...
"pretty high" is, of course, relative. long, long ago, in a universe far, far away i put together some purely imaginary numbers for something that might be close to this in the form of this post: www.rojisan.com/blog/2003/...the_cd.html
it may be useful... or not.

Fri, August 26, 2005 - 7:28 AMI believe amazon.com makes sales statistics readily availlable for items they sell. Which may or may not be helpfull, but it does show that there is a viable market.
There is another post here where someone is doing a survey for the venture she is thinking about, I've done them for an event. While you can't get enough people to promise to buy your proposed product you can have proof through survey that there is a market there and in the process discover if there is anything you might need to change about your plan.
most communities have an SBA (www.sba.gov) and other organizations and classes. I'd recommend talking to an advisor or taking a class on getting business loans, many musicians skip this but it helps, they can help you to write up an effective plan. Many services like this are cheap or free.
Good luck
