In Philadelphia, I booked a 30-minute show with 5 performers, each doing a 5-minute set and a group close. Each performer gets $200.

Last year I did a New Years Eve restaurant gig and charged double the normal going rate (2 x $75) for one 15-20 minute set. There was a second dancer after me... much better known in town. Probably charged more. But part of the reason I did it was that I could get out of there early enough to join friends downtown for midnight. Crappy freezing rain and taxis pushed to the max meant I did not get downtown until 12:15am and only had time to have one drink before we all headed for a restaurant to eat.

This year I'm partying. If I got a last minute call (ie: to replace an ill dancer) I'd ask triple plus taxi fare each way.

I got a call just this evening for a New Years Eve party. The original dancer is ill and will not be there. Since they advertised "belly dancing" they need a dancer. I told her I would do it for standard $100 for 20 min set and that is including transportation cost. she said the other dancer was only charging $50 and was staying the entire night ! This event is charging $10 per person in and it is BYOB and a food item - so they do not have a huge expense for food and drinks. She said they already have 100 tickets sold, so the $100 should be no biggy..but she said "no thanks" and asked for the phone number of another dancer [that I did not give] We all need to hold firm on pricing.
Do not under sell yourself. A casino can afford $500.. so give them 15 minutes every hour. That is 45 minutes dancing for $250.. looks fine to me.

Well gang - it looks like we're doing it for $500 - 2 dancers, 2 hours of dancing with breaks every 15-20 min. If they can't toss a hotel into the deal (if there are no rooms left at this point) then we get to boogie out ofthere at 11:00pm so we can drive home safely. If they put us up in a hotel, then we stay until 11:30.

I feel pretty good about it, considering two local dancers agreed that it was a fair price, and I even got to "make some demands" regarding hotel and travel expenses being covered and bargaining about the length of the show from 3 hours down to 2. Even if they couldn't negotiate price...

We'll be signing a contract next week. Any more tips?

As a point of reference, my troupe is performing NYE on and off for a total time commitment of 2 hours (approx four 10-15min sets). Our price for the evening for 3-5 dancers is $1000....and we were afraid that was low!! 2 dancers for 3 hours at $600 seems awfully low to me, especially for NYE. Then again, I don't know your market, but your restaurant rates are on par with ours.

You could move to Vegas and make that sort of money regularly. We'd love to have you here. Vegas rocks (or is that raks?)!!

Seriously, Vegas is the center of corporate events and there are tons of bellydancers here who make their entire living off corporate work. No need to even break into the national workshop scene at all.

Yeah I don't th ink I could pull off $400 for one set here....BUT I might tell her,
"I normally charge $150/2 sets an hour/dancer. In this case, toss in a hotel for the night, dinner and drinks, and we can swing $100/hour/dancer, making your whole party $600 for two dancers - 2 sets/hour."

That way I feel like I am using her $500 as a starting point for negotiating. *cuz I suck at negotiating* She can counter offer, or she can say she only wants us for 2hours in order to keep the cost within her budget. We'll still make $250 each and not have to be there as long.

Sound ok?

It's always good to qualify location.
In DC most dancers charge double on NYE (musicians charge double, some even triple on NYE). We don't really have set "atmosphere" rates- but you are doing 15 minute shows. Here the "going rate" for a 15-20 minute show is $200 (plus mileage etc). On New Years that would be $400.

Samira, I think you probably have a bit of a skewed New Years market there in Vegas! In Seattle, there are not a ton of New Years opportunities, so regular rates apply for us. But then again, our rates are already a bit above the usual (the comparison being typical restaurant rates, which are embarrassingly low!), so I guess it breaks even.

For New Year's Eve? I think that $500 will get her exactly one dancer -or- two dancers for 2 hours.

When I've done these sorts of shows and meet/greet events in Vegas I charge $125 per hour per dancer. And honestly, that was several years ago and the prices are probably higher today.

New Years Eve is a premium night and you can't be afraid to charge more for a corporate event.

I'm trying to book an Elvis Impersonator here in Vegas for an event I'm doing next year and they charge between $500-$1250/hour. So $125 is nothing...

I am trying to negotiate pricing for a particularly big gig, and I havn't done one to this extent so far, so I 'm not sure how to price it out.

Hollywood Casino 45 minutes away is having their New Year's Eve High Roller party themed, "arabian nights" and they want to hire two bellydancers for entertainment throughout the night. 700 guests, stages, risers, dance floors, etc. Mostly we will be background entertainment...The party is a total of 3 hours, from 8-11pm, but we'll be just dancing for 15-20 minutes to background music and then taking breaks....two of us at the same time in two differen areas of the ballroom.

She mentioned that her budget is $500 for the dancers, plus dinner and drinks, and she wants me to tell her how much that will get her.

For reference, I do a restaurant gig monthly - $75 for two 10 minute sets. That's unfortunately on the low end of our local rates - usually $75-120 for a restaurant show, but it was my first paying gig, and I'm still working on my negotiation skillz. : )

What would you tell the lady?
I'm definitely going to have her throw in a hotel for the night and a tank of gas to get out there...but...as for the price of the show?
