Is anyone else experimenting with twitter?

Yesterday, I attended a web conference in my day job on which someone did a presentation about twitter. I'd heard of it before, but hadn't felt motivated to try it myself.

Until now.

I've decided to go ahead and give it a try. So I signed up yesterday after her presentation.

So far, in my searching, I've found a lot of mentions of belly dance. The overwhelming majority seem to be belly dance students twittering about practicing, going to class, etc, as well as twittering about their daily lives. That's not so surprising - of course there are a lot more students than there are teachers or professionals. I've found two other belly dance teachers that I know on there and sent them notes to say hi and let them know I'm on there too.

So, I'm finding my way in this interesting new world. Are any of you using twitter for dance-related stuff? Do you see it as being a good tool for growing your dance-related business? If so, how? How are you going about building up your networks?

I'm on there as @shiradotnet if anyone wants to see what I'm up to!

    More questions, if you twitter...

How often do you send out twitters?

What makes you unsubscribe from someone's feed? Boring twitters? Updates too often? Something else?

By the way, for those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, see www.twitter.com . The best analogy I can think of for it is to think of it as being a blog with really brief (less than 200 character) entries. Sort of like your status line in facebook or myspace.

I've thought about it, but not sure for me at this point (performer and teacher of workshops, so not looking for regular students) it would balance out with the thought of having yet ANOTHER networking site.
It SOUNDS like a great resource to find students! Keep us posted on your experiences, please.
I also wonder- as it's mostly students- if it would be a worthwhile pursuit for our event organizers. *waggling eyebrows at the other Samira*

I'm there, Shira! It does help some with the blog posts - I usually post all my trunk shows for The Gypsy Kiss, as well as my new blog posts. It's important to check the @ tab in case someone is talking directly to you - for some reason, Twitter hasn't seen fit to show you if you have 'mail' there - you just have to click it. Crazy Twitter people. You also have lots of followers on FB - maybe if you put your Twitter profile in your status message a few times, people would find you more easily as well. I know that lots of people would love to be connected to your Twitter feed! :)

I just set up a Twitter account. I understand what it is, but like someone else mentioned, how can you find people you want to network with if you don't know them already? I did "follow" Shira. Is it possible to search for people in my area that share the interest of belly dance?

I haven't looked for this subject yet, but you do a twitter search for #bellydancer, #bellydance, #raqssharqi, etc. you hopefully will find some? The # is used by a lot of twitterites when they're tweeting on a particular subject. Mr. Tweet suggests twitterers to follow: twitter.com/MrTweet I haven't used that one, so I don't know how well it works if you're looking for something specific.

      good luck! ^_^

Yeah, that question of "Okay, now that I'm here, now what?" is The Big Question, isn't it? <smile>

I kind of separate this into two sub-questions: 1) How do I find people whose tweets I want to follow? and 2) How do I attract people to follow my tweets?

Here are some ways to find out who else is on twitter that you might want to follow:

      1. Click on my icon and you'll be taken to my profile. Off to the right you'll see tiny icons of the faces of the people I'm following. If you wave your mouse (without clicking) over one of those faces, you'll be told who it is. So, by looking to see who other dancers are following, you'll find out who else is on twitter and you can sign up to follow the ones who interest you. For example, I just looked at Mahsati's profile (she's one of the people I follow), and I see that she is following Neon, Sarah Skinner, and some other dancers.

      2. In the top right corner of twitter, you'll find a choice that says "Find People". If you pick that, you can search by person's name. That's how you'd look for someone that you believe might already be on twitter if you don't know what their twitter ID is.

      3. At the bottom of the twitter home page, you'll find a choice that says "Search". That will search the text of what people are saying in their tweets. When I first joined twitter, I searched it for "belly dance" and found a lot of tweets by beginning students saying, "I'm off to attend my belly dance class now...." Those generally turned out to be people I didn't feel like following because their belly dance related tweets were choked by lots of daily-life tweets - complaints about jobs, comments about boyfriends, etc.

      4. Participate in threads like this one and its counterpart on bhuz. Several people have posted their twitter names on this thread, so you can visit their profiles, see what they have been tweeting about, and then decide if you want to follow them. You can also use the technique in #1 above to see who else the people who posted on this thread are following.
