So I originally posted this on the "Too Much Drama to Dance" tribe, but thought it appropriate for discussion here too.
I'm just wondering what are people's thoughts on how to "tag" YouTube videos? I've seen some that get "under-tagged" and even though they are awesome and with famous dancers no one ever sees them, and on the other side there are people who "over-tag" their videos just to get them played more often. If you want to put "bellydance" in as many languages and terms as possible, I think that's smart, but when you start tagging other famous dancer's names I have a problem. I've seen it many times but just ran across a video (and the dancer will not be named) who tagged several BDSS members and a few other famous dancers. Someone commented and called out the dancer saying it was kind of sneaky, and the poster responded asking if they still liked the video, and anyway this dancer was "good friends" with them so they wouldn't mind. This still didn't strike me as very ethical.
If the dancer was really good friends with the people tagged and got their permission, then fine, but I gathered from the post that this person did not ask their permission. The only time (in my opinion) that it is appropriate to tag another dancer in your YouTube video is a) if it is a choreography by that dancer, in which case you should give credit where credit is due b) you are in a dance company with the other dancers, and are representing the troupe c) if you have studied with that person EXTENSIVELY - such as a licensure program - and are representing your teachers style d) that "tagged" dancers are aware of and have approved of being tagged.
I think the problem is not only people taking credit for another dancer's ability to build their name, but also the possibility that it will reflect on the "tagged dancers" in a way that they are not open to.
Any thoughts? Or am I just being a cranky b**** who needs to stop wasting time on YouTube?

Tue, August 4, 2009 - 5:19 PMI think the problem will take care of itself. A lot of views rarely means fame and fortune for anyone, and many who is lured there by mis-tagging will develop their own opinion (probably negative) of the tagger/dancer.

Re: Ethics of "tagging" (X-post from another tribe)
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 6:22 PMAgreed with Maura...and even if they got a lot of hits, as soon as people see it's not what they were looking for, they move on. I mean, it's sneaky and it sucks, but as always, the dancing will speak for itself.

Re: Ethics of "tagging" (X-post from another tribe)
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 8:42 PMI've seen a few cases of this. I really find it a turn off. If I'm looking for a video clip of X dancer, I want to see X dancer. I'm tolerant if it's a choreography by X dancer or if the dancer is representing X dancers troupe, but I can't understand tagging someone because you're good friends with them. Unless they actually show up in the clip it's a little counter-productive. You'll disappoint far more people than you'll inspire to hire you or otherwise.

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 10:07 PMI agree with you, and I think it is in poor taste. But alas, there probably isn't anything to actually do about it. Definitely a pet peeve, and I totally understand.

Ok, I'm going to show my ignorance here, exactly what is "tagging" ?
Always wanting to learn more,

Re: Ethics of "tagging" (X-post from another tribe)
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 11:35 AMZafira,
When you post a video on YouTube, on top of adding a title, you add "tags" on the description so that whenever someone searches for words with your "tags" that video is likely to pop up. For instance, if you danced at a bellydance show to Leylet Hob you could include tags such as "bellydance" "show" "raqs sharqi" "Leylet Hob" "Egyptian" etc. that describe your video and increase your chances of the video popping up for people who are interested in these things.
The problem discussed here is when people add tags like "BDSS" "Jillina" "Rachel Brice" "Ansuya" etc to their videos in order for them to get more views. If you are not a well known dancer people are unlikely to search your name specifically, and so the strategy is to attach other, better known names to your video in hopes that it will come up on a search.
I've seen it many times, but I saw one video in particular that made me very cranky about this issue for some reason. Hhhmmm could be because this summer in particular I've gotten really tired of empty name-dropping, and this video was the final straw on this camel's back. -

Re: Ethics of "tagging" (X-post from another tribe)
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 12:53 PMSame as meta tags or keywords for a webpage then. Thanks for the info!
OMG, that is ridiculous!!! If they're NOT the BDSS then that shouldn't be in their tag.
So technically if I put a meta tag in my webpage of BDSS I'd probably get more hits? RIDICULOUS, I am shaking my head in amazement.

Re: Ethics of "tagging" (X-post from another tribe)
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 1:52 PMI've had to ask someone to remove my name from the title, although I was fine with the tag. I wasn't in the video but we shared the same stage for the show. She politely removed it. All you can do is ask and hope people respect your wishes.
